myresearchcloud.ca (“we,” “our,” or “us”), operated by Computing for Humanity, is committed to ensuring that all data entrusted to our platform remains fully within Canadian jurisdiction and is governed exclusively by Canadian law. This policy explains our approach to data residency and sovereignty.

1. Governing Law

  • All personal information collected, stored, or processed on myresearchcloud.ca is subject to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Canada’s federal privacy law.

  • Where applicable, we also comply with relevant provincial legislation (e.g., Ontario’s FIPPA or Alberta’s PIPA) for public sector and academic research partners.

2. Data Residency

  • All compute, storage, and networking resources provided through myresearchcloud.ca are physically located in Canada.

  • No researcher, institutional, or donor data is transferred outside Canadian borders.

  • We do not rely on foreign cloud providers, nor do we mirror or back up data outside Canada.

3. Data Sovereignty

  • All data and metadata on myresearchcloud.ca are governed solely by Canadian law.

  • We are not subject to foreign legislation such as the U.S. CLOUD Act or the U.K. Investigatory Powers Act.

  • Our ownership, control, and operation are majority Canadian, ensuring independence from foreign government access orders.

4. Access & Control

  • Researchers retain ownership of their data at all times.

  • myresearchcloud.ca acts as a custodian, providing secure infrastructure without asserting intellectual property rights over hosted data.

  • Any request for disclosure of personal or research data will be handled strictly under Canadian legal due process.

5. Security & Compliance

  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

  • Infrastructure is managed under Canadian-based operational control, with no offshore administrators.

  • We align with PIPEDA’s accountability principle by maintaining policies, safeguards, and training to protect personal information.
